Position Summary:  

The Staff Accountant reports to the Assistant Controller and is responsible for providing key accounting and analytical support related to the Assistant Controller, CFO, and other stakeholders, as necessary.     

 

Qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Two plus years of accounting and/or auditing experience.
  • Advanced skills using Excel and other Microsoft products.
  • Advanced skills analyzing and reconciling all balance sheet accounts.
  • Experience using accounting software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter who can work independently on multiple tasks and projects.
  • Enthusiasm for the strategy, culture, projects and people of Garrett-Evangelical

 

Qualifications preferred:

  • Master’s degree or pursuing MS in accounting.
  • Experience working in higher education, non-profit in accounting or higher education auditing.
  • Experience working in public accounting or audit roles.
  • Working knowledge of technology management.
  • Jenzabar experience.
  • CPA or pursuing CPA is desirable.

 

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  • General Ledger Maintenance 
    1. Review and ensure entries are recorded accurately and in accordance with accounting standards.
    2. Prepare adjusting entries as needed.
  • Account Reconciliation:
    1. Complete timely and accurate reconciliations of assigned Balance Sheet accounts and cash accounts.
    2. Assist with preparing and reviewing reconciliations of Investment & Fixed Asset accounts.
  • Month-End Close & Financial Reporting:
    1. Assist in the closing process by preparing necessary entries and running flux analysis. 
    2. Assist with preparing the interim financials and functional expense report.
    3. Ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Fund Accounting Management:
    1. Create and track temporarily and permanently restricted funds according to donor’s intent.
    2. Assist in performing and recording net asset release from restrictions. 
    3. Assist in maintaining a good record of endowment funds roll forward report.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting:
    1. Assist in the creation of budgets and budget accounts.
    2. Assist in running financial forecasts, tracking financial performance and running variance analysis.
  • Internal Control & Audit:
    1. Ensure adherence to internal controls 
    2. Assist in audits by preparing workpapers, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Payroll and Benefits
    1. Assist in preparing accurate monthly and semi-monthly payroll for Assistant Controller Approval
    2. Assist in downloading applicable reports from ADP and review benefits and deductions.
    3. Assist in making contributions to Monthly Benefit Providers
