The Westside Justice Center
is seeking an experienced, accounting professional to manage the organization’s financial operations, with a strong focus on grants accounting, financial reporting and compliance. This role will be responsible for general ledger maintenance, overseeing accounts payable, supporting the organization’s annual audit and IRS Form 990 tax preparation, and ensuring the accuracy of financial records. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, including nonprofit experience, effective communication and analytical skills, and a commitment to supporting the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the submission of financial reports and analysis (budgets, vouchers, etc.) to private and government funders, including compliance documents and/or other reporting requirements
- Prepare, analyze, and oversee all financial reports requested by management and internal stakeholders related to grant activities
- Maintain financial documentation and records in compliance with organizational policies and procedures
- Track, report and maintain financial records for restricted and unrestricted grants, monitoring grant expenditures to ensure compliance with grant agreements and funding restrictions
- Maintain the general ledger by performing reconciliations and journal entries as necessary
- Process and record accounts payable transactions to the general ledger in accordance with budgeted expenses, including maintenance and review of supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare and process cash disbursements to all vendors and grantees upon approval
- Reconcile vendor accounts and address payment inquiries in timely manner
- Assist in preparing and organizing documentation for the annual financial audit and providing necessary documentation for the preparation of the IRS 990 tax returns and related filings
- Support the month-end and year-end close process to ensure financial transactions comply with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Provide support for process improvements, special projects and other finance-related tasks
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience/Training
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- Minimum of five (5) years accounting experience, including 1-2 years in nonprofit accounting
- Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit financial reporting standards.
Skills/Abilities
- Strong communication skills, both written and orally, to diverse audiences
- Excellent problem-solving and research skills
- Proficiency in MS Office with advanced skills in Excel and Google Sheets highly preferred
- Proven experience with accounting software (QuickBooks preferred)
- Keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills to complete work with accuracy, efficiency, and to meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently in a high-growth, fast-paced, and self-directed environment
