Position Overview:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the daily accounting functions of the cooperative, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and assisting with audits. This role also plays a key part in documenting and tracking storm-related expenses and preparing reports to support FEMA reimbursement efforts. The Staff Accountant will work collaboratively across departments to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial processes that support the cooperative’s electric, gas, and fiber operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and post journal entries, maintain general ledger accounts, and reconcile key accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial reports and statements.
  • Ensure accuracy in accounts payable and receivable processing.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Support the annual external audit by preparing required schedules and documentation.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of storm-related expenses and assist in the development of FEMA-compliant reports and submissions.
  • Track FEMA project worksheets, obligations, and reimbursements in coordination with operations and management.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and industry regulations.
  • Collaborate with departments including Electric, Gas, and Fiber to gather financial data and clarify accounting issues.
  • Support ad-hoc projects, process improvements, and policy development.


Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

2+ years of experience in accounting functions.

Strong knowledge of accounting software.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial tools.

Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an electric, gas, or fiber internet cooperative or similar industry.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office setting with occasional fieldwork or off-site meetings. Some extended hours may be required during storm recovery or reporting periods.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Occasional lifting or carrying of items up to 25 pounds (e.g., files, binders, laptop equipment).

Ability to travel between office locations or to offsite meetings as needed.

Visual acuity to review detailed financial documents and use a computer monitor for extended periods.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via email.
